Perth is home to a dynamic and respected tertiary education sector, featuring four public universities, two private universities, and two major TAFE colleges, offering students opportunities across a wide spectrum of academic and vocational fields.

Leading Public Universities

At the forefront is The University of Western Australia (UWA), founded in 1911 and recognized as one of the nation’s most prestigious research universities. Its neo-classical limestone architecture and riverside Crawley campus attract visitors as much as scholars. UWA holds the distinction of being Western Australia’s only member of the Group of Eight—a coalition of Australia’s top research universities—and the state’s only institution to have produced a Nobel Laureate, Dr. Barry Marshall, who received the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Curtin University, established in 1966 as the Western Australian Institute of Technology, is the largest university in the state by student population. It is known for its strong focus on innovation, technology, and global engagement, with campuses and collaborations extending worldwide.

Murdoch University, founded in 1973, is home to Western Australia’s only veterinary school and was once the only university in Australia to fully integrate a theology program within a secular institution.

Edith Cowan University (ECU), created in 1991, evolved from the Western Australian College of Advanced Education. Named after Edith Cowan, Australia’s first female parliamentarian, ECU includes the renowned Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), which has launched the careers of internationally acclaimed artists and performers.

Private Universities

The University of Notre Dame Australia, established in 1990, brings a Catholic heritage and European charm to its Fremantle campus, located among restored 19th-century port buildings. It also operates campuses in Sydney and Broome, combining traditional values with modern education.

In 2022, the Melbourne-based University of Divinity extended its reach to Perth by admitting Wollaston College—the theological college of the Anglican Diocese of Perth—as a collegiate institution, expanding the city’s theological and philosophical education offerings.

Vocational and Technical Education

Beyond universities, Perth’s TAFE colleges play a crucial role in providing practical and trade-based education. These institutions offer certificate and diploma programs designed to meet industry needs. The metropolitan area hosts North Metropolitan TAFE (formerly Central Institute of Technology and West Coast Institute of Training) and South Metropolitan TAFE (formerly Polytechnic West and Challenger Institute of Technology).

Together, these universities and colleges make Perth a vibrant educational destination, blending academic excellence with hands-on vocational training—preparing local and international students alike for success in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
